Project Indi
Andrew visited two of our regular stops on 15th and 18th September in Newcastle - Project Indi in the Community at Clayton Sports Centre and a small group home for adults with learning disabilities and autism in Wolstanton. The Project Indi group has been growing steadily and are now moving to a nearby church where they have space for more people and especially for wheelchair users.
We talked about transport, including buses, trains, taxis, Ubers and the state of the roads. One person told us they only use familiar bus routes as they feel quite vulnerable and use Ubers as their mum has the app so can track where they are.
People told us how much of a struggle it is to get a powered wheelchair onto some buses. One member (who we'd never met before) was very quiet during the meeting but, at the end, gave Andrew a card she'd been making and asked everyone to thank him for coming. Which was nice!
In Wolstanton, one of the residents talked about how much he enjoys going to Stafford with his mum, for shopping and a meal at the Picture House (Stafford town centre's cinema from 1914 to 1995 and, after closing, re-opened as a pub in 1997). He said he enjoys getting the 101 bus but it takes a long time to get there. He thinks an express service that goes direct to Stafford once an hour would be a much quicker, and very popular option.
